Dental check-ups & consultations in Larkfield
A dental check-up is one of the simplest β and most important β things you can do for your health. It gives us a chance to catch small problems before they become bigger ones, and to make sure your mouth is in the best possible shape.
More than a quick look
what is a dental check-up?
A dental check-up (also called a dental examination) is a thorough assessment of your teeth, gums, and the soft tissues in your mouth. It's not just about looking for cavities β we're checking for signs of gum disease, worn enamel, jaw problems, and early indicators of mouth cancer.
For new patients, we carry out a full initial consultation. This gives us a complete picture of your dental history, any concerns you have, and what your mouth looks like right now. It's a proper conversation, not a quick look β we want to understand you as an individual.
Every check-up at Larkfield Dental Aesthetics includes:
- β A full examination of your teeth and gums
- β A mouth cancer screening
- β A review of any X-rays
- β A chance to ask us anything

Gum assessment

We'll give you all the information you need and let you make decisions at your own pace.
Prevention at home
between check-ups
A check-up is only as effective as the home care routine that goes with it. We'll give you personalised advice at every appointment, but as a general guide:
- β Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste β last thing at night is the most important.
- β Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.
- β Limit sugary food and drinks β especially between meals.
- β Book your next check-up before you leave β don't wait until something hurts.

Questions
frequently asked
Does a dental check-up hurt? +
No. A check-up is completely painless. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums and may use a small probe β you'll feel gentle pressure but nothing sharp or uncomfortable. If you have sensitive gums, please let us know in advance.
What is a mouth cancer check? +
A mouth cancer check is a quick visual examination of the soft tissues in and around your mouth β tongue, cheeks, lips, floor of the mouth, and throat. We look for any unusual lumps, patches, or ulcers. Most of the time there's nothing to find, but catching mouth cancer early dramatically improves outcomes. It takes just a few minutes and is included in every check-up.
I haven't been to a dentist in several years β will you judge me? +
Absolutely not. We understand that life gets in the way, and that some people have had difficult experiences at the dentist in the past. Whatever your starting point, we're here to help β not to lecture. We'll assess where you are now and put together a plan to get your mouth healthy again.
How often should children have a dental check-up? +
Children should be seen every six months from when their first teeth appear. We offer dedicated children's dentistry appointments in a friendly, relaxed environment. See our Children's Dentistry pages for more. Visit Children's Dentistry
