What are dentures?
Custom-made to fit you
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the gum tissue around them. They come in two main types. Full (complete) dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both, resting on the gum and held in place by suction and the natural contours of the jaw. Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth where some natural teeth remain, clipping onto or resting against the remaining teeth using clasps or precision attachments.
Both types are custom-made from impressions of your mouth to fit your individual gum and jaw shape. We use high-quality acrylic and metal frameworks — made by specialist dental laboratories — to produce dentures that are strong, well-fitting, and natural in appearance.
We can also discuss implant-retained dentures — dentures that clip onto implants fixed in the jawbone, providing significantly improved stability and confidence.

How it works
What does treatment involve?
Getting new dentures involves several appointments over four to six weeks. Here's what the process looks like.
Initial consultation
We assess your mouth, take X-rays if needed, and discuss your options and expectations.
Impressions & measurements
We take detailed impressions of your gums and jaws, and record the relationship between them.
Try-in appointment
A trial wax denture lets you see and feel the fit before it's finalised — your chance to give feedback.
Fitting
Your finished dentures are fitted, adjusted for comfort and bite, with any final tweaks made.
Follow-up
A follow-up appointment a week or two after fitting checks how you're getting on.
Aftercare
Getting used to your dentures
New dentures always take some getting used to. Most patients adapt within four to eight weeks. In the early days you may notice increased saliva, mild soreness, or slight changes to your speech — all of these settle as your mouth adjusts. Here's how to care for your dentures and your mouth:
- ✓ Remove your dentures at night to give your gum tissue a rest — soak them in water or a denture-cleaning solution overnight.
- ✓ Clean your dentures daily with a soft denture brush and specialist denture cleaner — not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive.
- ✓ Rinse your dentures after eating.
- ✓ Brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth twice a day.
- ✓ Handle dentures over a folded towel or a basin of water — they can break if dropped.
- ✓ Never use hot water on dentures — it can warp the acrylic.
- ✓ Attend your regular dental check-ups even if you have no natural teeth, so we can check the fit and the health of your gums and bone.
- ✓ As your jaw shape changes over time, dentures may need relining or replacing — usually every five to eight years.

Will dentures look natural? +
Yes. Modern denture teeth are designed to look natural in size, shape, and colour. We take care to choose teeth that suit your face and complexion, and our laboratory work is of a high standard. When fitted well, most people won't know you're wearing dentures.
Will I be able to eat normally with dentures? +
Most patients can eat a wide range of foods with well-fitting dentures. You may need to adapt slightly at first — cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing on both sides simultaneously. Very sticky or extremely hard foods are best avoided. As you adjust, you'll find eating becomes much easier.
Are there alternatives to dentures? +
Yes. Dental implants are a fixed, permanent alternative that many patients find more comfortable and convenient. Implant-retained dentures combine the stability of implants with the coverage of dentures — a great option for patients who've been told they're not suitable for fixed implants. We'll talk through all your options at your consultation.
What if my dentures don't fit properly? +
Poorly fitting dentures cause soreness, ulcers, and difficulty eating. If your dentures are uncomfortable or have become loose, please contact us. We can reline (reshape the fitting surface) or replace them as appropriate. Don't try to adjust them yourself and never use over-the-counter denture adhesives as a long-term fix — they mask the problem rather than solving it.
