Dental X-rays in Larkfield, Kent
Some of the most important things happening in your mouth are invisible to the naked eye. Dental X-rays let us see what's going on beneath the surface β so we can find problems early and treat them before they become serious.
Seeing beneath the surface
what are dental x-rays?
Dental X-rays (also called dental radiographs) are images of your teeth, roots, and jawbone taken using a very small, targeted beam of radiation. They let your dentist see things that simply cannot be spotted during a visual examination β decay between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, infections below the gumline, and impacted teeth.
At Larkfield Dental Aesthetics we use digital X-ray technology. Digital X-rays are faster and produce a sharper, more detailed image than older film X-rays β and they use significantly less radiation. The image appears on screen within seconds, so we can discuss what we're seeing with you straight away.
There are two main types of dental X-ray we use in practice:
- β Bitewing X-rays β These show the upper and lower back teeth and are primarily used to detect decay between teeth and changes in bone density.
- β Periapical X-rays β These show the whole tooth from crown to root and are used to assess the root and surrounding bone, particularly when investigating pain or planning root canal treatment.
Only when necessary
when would you need a dental x-ray?
We only take X-rays when they are clinically necessary β we never take them routinely without a reason. Common situations where X-rays are needed include:
New patient assessment
To establish a full picture of your dental health when you join the practice.
Routine monitoring
Typically every 12β24 months for adult patients, depending on their cavity risk.
Toothache or sensitivity
To identify the cause of pain or sensitivity that can't be seen on the surface.
Root canal treatment
Before, during and after treatment β to assess the root structure, surrounding bone and filling material.
Crowns, bridges & implants
Before placing a crown, bridge, or implant β to check bone levels and root anatomy.
Detecting gum disease
To assess bone loss around the teeth caused by gum disease.
Children & teenagers
Checking the development and position of teeth as they grow.
Wisdom teeth
To see whether wisdom teeth are impacted and likely to cause problems.
Inside your appointment
what happens during a dental x-ray?
Having a dental X-ray is quick and easy. Here's what to expect.
Take a seat
You'll be seated in the dental chair as normal β nothing unusual about the setup.
Sensor positioned
Your dentist or dental nurse will position a small sensor (or film holder) in your mouth against the area being X-rayed.
Bite gently
You'll be asked to bite gently on the sensor to hold it in place.
The X-ray is taken
The X-ray is taken from outside your mouth β you simply stay still for a second.
Instant image
The image appears on screen almost immediately.
Results explained
Your dentist will explain what they can see and what it means for your treatment.
After your visit
caring for your teeth after an x-ray
X-rays themselves require no aftercare β they are a diagnostic tool. However, the results may lead to a treatment recommendation.
If your X-rays show any concerns, your dentist will discuss your options and provide a written treatment plan.

Questions
frequently asked
Are dental X-rays safe? +
Yes. The dose of radiation from a modern digital dental X-ray is extremely small β far less than the background radiation you're naturally exposed to every day from the environment, food, and air travel. We follow strict guidelines and only take X-rays when they are clinically necessary.
Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy? +
We generally avoid routine X-rays during pregnancy unless there is a clinical need that cannot wait. If an X-ray is essential, we take appropriate precautions. Please always let us know if you are pregnant or think you may be before any appointment.
Why can't the dentist just look without taking an X-ray? +
A visual examination can only show the surfaces of your teeth and gums. X-rays let us see between teeth, below the gumline, inside the tooth root, and through the jawbone β areas where decay, infection, and bone loss can develop silently for months or years before becoming visible or painful.
My previous dentist took X-rays recently β do I need them again? +
Not necessarily. If you have recent X-rays from your previous dentist, we'd be happy to use those. Please bring them with you (or ask your previous practice to send them over) and we'll review them as part of your new patient consultation.
