A sign of thorough care

what is a dental referral?

A dental referral is when your dentist arranges for you to be seen by a specialist for a particular type of treatment that requires advanced training, specialist equipment, or specific expertise. Being referred is a sign of thorough clinical care — it means your dentist has identified exactly what you need and is making sure you get it from the right person.

We work with a carefully selected network of trusted specialists across Kent. When we refer a patient, we don't just send a letter — we send your complete dental records, relevant X-rays, and a detailed clinical summary, so the specialist has everything they need from day one.

Types of specialist care

when might you be referred?

Common situations where a referral to a specialist is appropriate include:

For particularly complex root canal cases, including curved canals, calcified canals, re-treatment of previously failed root canals, or multi-rooted teeth requiring specialist microscope equipment.

Oral surgery

For surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, complex extractions, cyst removal, or jaw procedures.

For advanced or aggressive gum disease that requires specialist management.

04

Orthodontics

For teeth straightening cases beyond the scope of our in-house provision (we offer Invisalign in-house; complex fixed brace cases may be referred).

Oral medicine

For persistent mouth ulcers, unusual lesions, or conditions affecting the soft tissues of the mouth that need specialist investigation.

06

Dental implants

For surgical placement of implants in cases requiring bone grafting or sinus lifting.

Afterwards & costs

what happens after a referral?

  • After your specialist treatment is complete, the specialist will write to us with a full report of what was done and any recommendations for your ongoing care.
  • You'll then continue with us as normal for your routine dentistry — check-ups, hygienist appointments, and any other general treatment you need.
  • There is no charge for the referral itself — arranging your care is part of looking after you as a patient.
  • The specialist treatment you receive will be charged by the specialist practice, and they will provide you with a full cost breakdown before any treatment begins.

For endodontic referrals to our practice from other dental practices, please contact us on 01732 521123 or email hello@larkfielddentalcare.co.uk to discuss fees and availability.
