Clear aligners have changed the game for adult orthodontics. Here is how Invisalign really compares to traditional metal braces.

Straightening your teeth as an adult can feel like a bigger decision than it did as a teenager — you're weighing up comfort, cost, how visible the treatment will be at work, and how it fits around your life. The good news is you now have genuine choice, and we can talk through both options honestly at a consultation.

Traditional metal braces remain one of the most effective ways to correct complex bite issues. They're fixed to your teeth for the full course of treatment, which means consistent, round-the-clock progress with no reliance on you remembering to wear anything. For severe crowding, large bite corrections or certain jaw relationships, fixed braces can still be the most predictable route.

Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners that gently move your teeth over time. Because they're removable, you can eat what you like and keep your usual brushing and flossing routine — but that convenience relies on discipline, since aligners need to be worn for around 20 to 22 hours a day to stay on track.

Aesthetically, Invisalign is the clear winner for anyone self-conscious about visible metalwork. Clinically, both approaches can achieve excellent results — the right choice really comes down to the complexity of your case, which is something we assess carefully rather than assuming clear aligners suit everyone.

During treatment with Invisalign you will typically change to a new aligner every one to two weeks, with progress reviews so we can check that teeth are tracking as planned. Mild to moderate cases often finish sooner; more complex movements take longer. Retainers after treatment are essential with either option if you want results to last.

Whichever route you take, the timeline for most adult cases falls somewhere between six and eighteen months. We'll map out a realistic plan, including cost and expected results, before any treatment begins — so you can decide with confidence.
