From sensitive teeth to bleeding gums, here are the everyday signals your mouth sends when it needs professional attention.

It's easy to put off a dental visit when nothing feels obviously wrong — but plenty of early warning signs are quiet enough to miss until a small problem becomes a bigger one. At Larkfield Dental Aesthetics, regular check-ups aren't just about clean teeth; they're your best chance of catching issues while they're still simple and comfortable to treat.

Sensitivity to hot or cold is often the first sign that enamel is wearing thin or a small cavity has started to form. It's tempting to simply avoid ice cream or hot drinks, but sensitivity rarely goes away on its own — it tends to get worse without professional care.

Bleeding or swollen gums when you brush or floss is another signal worth listening to. In the early stages this is usually gingivitis, which is completely reversible with a professional clean and better home care. Left unchecked, it can progress to gum disease, which isn't reversible and may need longer-term treatment.

Other signs to watch for include persistent bad breath, a clicking or tired jaw, food regularly getting stuck between the same teeth, a filling that feels rough or different, or teeth that have started to look slightly longer as gums recede. None of these are emergencies on their own, but together they're your mouth asking for a proper look.

We also see patients who only notice a problem when a tooth starts to ache at night, or when a crack appears after biting something hard. By then, treatment can be more involved than a simple filling. Six-monthly examinations with digital X-rays when needed help us spot decay and bone changes long before pain appears.

The simplest rule of thumb: if it's been more than six months since your last check-up, it's time to book one — even if everything feels fine. Prevention is always more comfortable, and more affordable, than a cure. New and existing patients in Larkfield, Aylesford, West Malling and the wider Maidstone area are always welcome.
